Eye-Candy
« on: 01.29.08 | 05:28 AM »
The Subject says it all. What are some of the things u would like to see in Legions.

I'll start
Burning trails, I think it be pretty sweet as u jet over grass, the grass burned and similar things to different terrain.
Gore, I want bodies to explode, arm, legs, head, everything to be blown off. haha maybe have the head or the body capable of actualy hitting another player  Grin

All I can think of 4 now, how about u guys?

I think the overheating chaingun was a cool thing in T:V, the way that heatsink got red hot would look 10x better with the heat displacement maps games have had lately

I think scorch marks on the ground from weapons would be great, that way you can really tell where the 'hot spots' are and can play more appropriately.

How about weather effects?

Yea the heatsink was pretty cool

Having the scorch marks or burning trails in areas lets u have a visual of where ur prey has gone and hunt him down.

as for wheather, i did read somewhere where some maps would have a sand storm, blizzard and such.

weather effects are eye candy but it seems most people always turn them off (rain, snow). random lightning that damages you must not be included!

amen on the lightning

I think weather effects should be forced on. If it has an impact on how easy your opponent is to spot it shouldnt be editable by the player. Game performance has progressed enough that it should be acceptable to have more of these sorts of things included and required

This is the truth.  Although I always thought it would be fun for a mod to have a gun that shoots lightning rods into someone with a duration period.  Over the course of 30 seconds mebbe they get zapped from above Cheesy

Random lightning is never fun tho Sad

I think random events, even random death, have a place and would be worthwhile. However, the reason players think random events are not fun is because no one likes it when a contest can be decided completely by chance, thus defying all accomplishments earn by would-be competitors.

You wouldn't want your team to be playing the "super bowl" and just 5 seconds away from being Kings of the World and going to Disney Land when... BZZZT sorry, Mother Nature thinks not. Better Luck next year.

Players are control freaks, they love very routine and predictable events so that when they perform their mad skillz, everything goes just as it should, just as it did last time and every time before that. No risk, No Worry, All Glory.

Me? I think it has a place in more casual settings, like the randomness of a pub game. There are no stakes involved so who cares? It would break up the random, predictable routine of playing the same map, in the same conditions over and over again. Admit it, you'd find it just as hilarious as I would to be chasing a capper with a giant lightning rod on his back when *poof* he gets toasted by a completely random, 1 in a hundred, shot of lightning. So what if it was the game winning cap! It's a pub game and now it's a memorable one . It's just, such events, like random death, couldn't be very frequent. They'd have to be rare enough so they never lose their novelty and become expected and routine.

Weather Effects would a great way to break up the routine of a Pub Game. However, they'd have to be effects that actually have an effect and are not just a pretty screen overlay that anyone can toggle off. If it's a downpour, then grass gets really slick and dirt gets really slow. Or, if a sand storm rolls in then everything takes a dose of damage over time while outside (deployables degrade, players lose HP ect). Imagine the map loads and then unexpectedly the weather goes sour and the whole playing field changes. It would add a touch of variety to the otherwise routine, overplayed rotation of a map.

WALL OF TEXT

Personally, I'd hate for weather to have that much of an effect on the game, regardless if it's pub or comp.  Perhaps the problem with random lightning strikes is that there's really no way to counter those and they come without warning.  Just an idea I'm throwing together in my head to possibly address those problems....

Scenario:
- A guy is flying.
- He sees a dark patch of cloud with lights flashing inside it (so he knows it's possible to get struck before entering)
- He flies into/under the patch of cloud.
- If he's flying too high, he'll get a lightning warning on his hud, seconds before the lightning strikes. (Maybe have a countdown... though that may remove more of the random element)

- He clears out of the lightning zone.
OR
- He flies low enough so lightning doesn't strike him (Flying low stops the lightning warning.  Strikes the terrain instead)
OR
- he flies lower than other players in the area so they get struck instead of him.
OR
- He tosses a nade or shoots a projectile up so the lightning strikes that instead.  (probably need countdown to time perfectly)

I think this scenario demonstrates a level of randomness I'd be more comfortable with.  It is somewhat random, yet there's ways to counter certain situations and still maintain a part of fun from the random element.

A random event doesn't have to be leathal. Even when its a lightning strike... you are wearing a metal shell after all. It could just be something a little different, a twist that throws a wrench in your well laid predictable plans forcing you to adapt and overcome.

It should also be toggled on or off.

I like the cloud idea, it gives an element of gameplay to the random factor

Lightning actually sounds like fun now.

I'd probably want to replace the HUD warning with sharp environmental sound effects along with the visual cue of the darkened cloud patch with subtle electrical flashes coming from within, and then remove the countdown and just make it so the first thing to pass under the cloud at a certain height would trigger a column of lightning, so you could maybe shoot it to make it hit people below.

Meh, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Keep the ideas rolling though. Cheesy

I'll be happy with so-so graphics and exceptional gameplay.  But if the tim and his guys get the gameplay all ironed out and are really bored then I suggest being able to string fallen enemy heads to your player and let them drag on the ground behind you while you keep skiing... muahahahaha!

Random lightning deaths are funny as hell till it happens to you.
So is Ctrl+K still going to be the default button for "god mode?"

I really hope weather wont damper gameplay whether it be in a pub or in comp. Back in t2 I always hated doing a cap route just to get hit by lightning and ruin my run. I find anything that is random in a game to be annoying. Angry

Edit: However if there is bit more control over the randomness like mentioned in earlier posts then I think it can be interesting if done right.
