AIAS: What game are you most jealous of?

Castle: Halo. Halo was the 90% of the game we (Westwood) were trying to make with Renegade.  Many of the features of both games were very similar but we did not end up with the game we imagined.  It took Halo and Battlefield to bring those visions to life.  I'm jealous of the quality of execution and set of features we knew, years earlier, would lead to a great game.

That execution and vision was achieved years before Halo and BF and you now own the IP. The power of marketing is amazing. That is all...

The question after that is even better.

A: Trust in proven development teams.  I strongly feel that all organizations try too hard to define the indefinable and too closely monitor and direct the creative process.  As an industry, we pay proven talent a ton of money yet we don't trust that they will deliver.

Halo is fun but thats not my point to say one is better then the other. I just get annoyed by industry insider inaccuracies related to game innovations. Gaming is getting extremely commercial and with that we get a lot of cloudy interpretations. Some of you are too young to remember, but Halo was partially inspired by Tribes. Battlefield was also heavily inspired by Tribes especially the vehicle implementation. You would think legends of the computer industry would know it or make mention of it. Halo did not revolutionize the type of gameplay you know and love. It was Starsiege Tribes and on the deathmatch side Quake and Doom. The only reason you hear people say this about Halo is because it is the current industry money machine darling hyped up by the Microsoft money machine on a console. The only reason.

The first Halo game was pretty darn generic compared to Tribes 1. Tribes came out in 1998. One of the first games sold that was multiplayer only which in itself was controversial. The first Halo game came out in 2001. In 2001 Tribes 2 was already coming out and no game not even Halo had the open battlefield style of play or vehicles like Tribes 2 at the time. There is no such thing as Tribes aspiring to be like Halo its the reverse. Lets just get that clear because after 12 years of playing Tribes Im sick of hearing pundits of the industry credit Halo or Battlefield for all these wonderful achievments. I hate getting all game geeky over this stuff, but this is one innacuracy that always annoys me.

A little perspective.

The first Halo game was pretty darn generic compared to Tribes 1.

Halo mainly succeeded because it was a reasonably competent multiplayer FPS released *on a console* at a time when there weren't too many of them.  If it had been a PC-only release, no one would have thought much of it.

I've always thought that if Goldeneye had been released for the Playstation instead of the N64, it would have reached about the same level of popularity as Halo, and possibly more.

Knowing a bit of Halo's history, I doubt it was inspired by Tribes.  Merely saying this opens up a huge can of worms that I'll probably regret doing, but hey, this place can never have too much drama...

Halo did not need inspiration. It is a generic game now and it was at the time of its release. If it was made a couple years earlier, then it would have been something new. By the time of its release though it was pretty bland.

It's only significant feature is its home on a console that claimed the first to allow networking on a massive scale and made online gaming available in many homes for the first time, much more than the XBAND or comparable items in the next console generation. From opening up so many people to online gaming for the first time it was wildly overhyped. Those who were not in the gaming scene before then would claim it as one of the best FPS games. Those who were call it mildly fun, but nothing spectacular.

The first Halo on Xbox didn't have any online multiplayer, just networking support.  Compared to other PC games, Halo wasn't all that revolutionary (not even evolutionary) but on the console it was something special.  The controls were tight, the graphics were tight, and the grandeur of the game was something that the consoles had rarely seen from a FPS (with the exception of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, mind you).

+1.  I wanted to say something similar but didn't know how to without looking like a Halo fanboy.  I enjoy both games(Halo 1 and Tribes, that is), but comparing them to each other is a little asinine.

Ever play MidgetHunt?

One-shot-kill, shotguns only, players vs. sims.  All the sims are fistsims with the Elvis body and human faces.

Good fun Grin

I don't think the OP was really bashing/attacking Castle.  Just pointing out a quote he made.  Overall this thread seems to be Tribes>Halo.  And in quite a number of areas it is.  Plus, as you and I have both said comparing them to each other just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I scrolled up and down this thread looking for the username 'castlecrashers', thinking you meant someone specifically.  Phail.   Undecided
