Melee Weapon ideas | Whats your thoughts?

The melee discussion some how stoped in the weapons topic so lets bring it back up here. Im thinking it would be really fun to have a good melee weapon in legions.

Atm im thinkin of a sword that when used, its user enters overdrive mode at will. Yes you can run faster with a sword Wink although overdrive mode sends the user into the direction they are facing and cant turn un till overdrive is off which i believe balances its usage.

Overdrive mode with the sword is like a dash
The sword must be timed well on the target to deal great damage. too soon or too late will end up in less dmg.

because we talked about all weapons that can be done and its always : sword / shocklance / fist.. thats why we can let the last topic R.I.P until we get the beta in hands.

shocklace, what? i never saw that thing as a melee weapon. it was kinda mid ranged aswell wasnt it? I still see it as a gun instead of melee. The shocklance just seemed kinda dull to me for the fact it was just about getting the enemy from the back and a gay shock killed em. I think a melee weapon should be something that has more usage other than an instant kill from the back.

what do you think of my sword idea anyway? i think it will increase the game pace and it would be alot of fun to use.

Would be kinda pointless you would never or rarly ever be in close distance to another player.
The Shocklance worked because you where chasing big fat heavies around and as it was a 1hit kill.

Whether it takes the same form or not, the shocklance range and effect were the best fit for the game.

Melee weapons have been mostly token additions to most FPS games I've every seen. Even the iconic Crow Bar of Gordon Freeman wasn't much of a weapon, more of a singleplayer tool to bash crates and grates with.


There are fundamental flaws/hurdles with the First Person Environment that basically limit the value of a Melee weapon. As such, every melee weapon in an FPS is nothing more then a really short firearm and therefore an item with a handicap in it's most basic design. Even the Shocklance is nothing more then a very short ranged shotgun.

The closest thing we have that has proven successful and a worthwhile addition is not an individual weapon, but the Melee Attack which is an action instead. Games with a Melee Attack have a melee-like ambience while still maintaining a worth while value with it's inclusion.

melee weapons, to me, are weapons that have unlimited ammo and you need to be close range for it to work. I think a shocklance is good enough to be named a melee weapon.

this is why i said a sword with the ability to enter overdrive at will. The speed from overdrive will allow u to dash quickly at the enemy for a hit.

but it seems theres no way getting around the shocklance with you guys  Undecided that thing was boring for me.

I love it, don't get me wrong.

I've been thinking about melee weapons lately and one of the most pressing thoughts that came to mind was: why?

This is a futuristic game. I'd love to have the shocklance (or something similar) in my pocket, but does it really fit with the game?

a weapon to give you overdrive...  thats sounds like it would just ruin the object of overdrive as i understand it Overdrive is something you get when going at a certain speed you get a speed boost in one direction but it costs you health?.

The only way I can see a true melee weapon in tribes working would be if you had Full conrtol in the air and infinate energy and had your manga style midair sword/axe/whatever fights.. maybe a idea for a mod.

I my view any weapon in a 3 axis shooter should be designed to keep the fights at quick speeds and not slow movement down. IE medium ROF projectile weapons ie arcing grenade launchers for ground targets Rockets(cant help it Disk launchers) for midairs and also a Chaingun/mini gun for pursuit Smiley and Laser snipers(the only hitscan weapon) for some nice gh3y osniping.
There the 4 main staples of the genre, you then add in extra for different gameplay ideas, Blasters infie ammo good spawn weapon, Missles for against Vehicals(if added) Base assest killers low rof high dmg morters etc.(again if there added)

seriously im thinking more along lines of predator,compact and close to mid range.

claws ( love the warhammer 40k terminator claws)?

a energy whip of some kind?

rocket/energy javalin. fun to stab them, then hurl it in some dudes face?

but if there is a "class" that uses melee weps, dose that mean everyone/class should have some kind of basic melee? (punch/kick)

I like the idea of the sword with overdrive so that even if you were in mid air and you were within 10-15 meters of an enemy you could propel yourself and *dancing* slice their heads off, but then that just seems to mess with the range of movements.

Short range projectiles whether it be a boring 20 m shotgun or a "futuristic" 17 m shocklance is the ideal pseudo-melee weapon for the game because it opens up another dimension to fighting (as long as it is high powered). This way you get your cocky light armors to be constantly entertained with the chance of making a rediculously difficult kill to satisfy themselves (me being one of them). This is why the backlance was so successful in T2 (although many serious competitors scolded people for using the lance unless they were one of the best).

I think the biggest question would be how deadly do we want them to be, i think really maybe 1 hit from the back.

also the aim system for them is important, is it to be just if its onscreen and in range you hit them or will it have a specific point alal DoD
