Now why does this seem a familiar topic? -.-
Mreh. A fair whack of T:v multiplayer certainly screwed the pooch. However, personally, I adored the movement (including the grappler), which has yet to be bettered (again, for me) in any other game. I also enjoyed the flag passing and most of the combat (some weapons were just shitteh).
Vanilla T:v sucked a serious amount of arse, but the tweaked version that kept me entertained for four years is still, for me, a gameplay experience unlike any other.
I'm going to guess that a lot of T1 and T2 players would say the same of their own experiences in those games.
I wandered through my local babbages and was like what is this? Turned the box over "No way it has jetpacks?!"
Took it home and I was blown away. Played Tribes nearly every day until Giants: CK came out. Playing as the smiley faced mercs was fairly similar to playing tribes.... and thought the universe was fun. Jetting and hitting the nitro really made me crave a new tribes. The the trailer for tribes 2 came out... and I played that till the master server died. I was even in the competition scene with a clan called the Galactic Chickens lol.
The point of this story is to enlighten you guys to the fact that I was a serious tribes fan.
I pre-ordered T:V. I love that game... PERIOD. I loved the passive and active abilities on the packs... the new skiing model (I was also in the private beta for T:V when the skiing was broken.) The buckler..... the redesign of the energy pistol.... the new disc launcher. The only thing I really hated was how you couldn't go "out of bounds" and how there were no "Large" maps... consequently there was a smaller selection of vehicles. I like the Pod, I thought it was more useful than a Shrike ever could be.... just that it was too slow... and plainly all the vehicles looked ugly. Why they took away all the nifty hovering and added wheels to all the land vehicles I'll never understand.... but plainly.... it did what it was supposed to do.
You guy do remember "Tribes: Fast Attack" right? It was Tribes 3, being developed by dynamix..... then they went under. Fast attack's synopsis is this:
"Tribes Fast Attack was to be a compilation of two separate products in one package: Fast Attack and an updated version of Tribes 2. The new version of Tribes 2 offered two new and exclusive mods called Team Rabbit 2 and Competition Mod, while Fast Attack offered a gameplay experience inspired by Tribes 2 for the PlayStation 2 (developed by Inevitable Entertainment), which is designed for smaller teams and offers a pretty in-depth single player campaign (something Tribes players have been asking for for a very long time)." - IGN.
So that's exactly what T:V was, and they re-released tribes 2 for free shortly after on file planet.
Everything about T:V was better when it game to player movement & combat. Where it failed was removing player choices and scope. Had that game had Katabatic in it with fast vehicles and 10 packs instead of 4... non "deployable" mines and different off hand grenade types it would have been held in the highest regard as the best Tribes game ever made.
The sad part is Sierra was running out of money, so they had no advertising and was then bought by Vivendi who made the decision to drop the price instead of actually advertising (the game dropped from full price to $9.99 in under a month from release at all retailers.) Citing poor sales they decided to pull all support for the title all together.
The game was troubled from the beginning... but the game was not bad. I hear all these people saying it was the worst tribes game ever.... but it was really nearly the same only with better movement and a focus on smaller faster battles.
People need to quit with all the hate... or hate in the proper manner.
Saying T:V sucks isn't the proper manner.... Explaining why it "sucks" is.
-No functional command map
-Smaller maps
-Less packs
-Less vehicles
-Only 32 players (as opposed to some of tribes 2's 128 player servers)
-The grappling hook (it made CTF a stalemate with a light with the energy pack and G-hook) In order for the hook to work it would have had to replace the Jet Pack IMO.
-No different grenade types
-Less deployables
+Better movement and faster skiing
+Better redesigns for Heavy Armors (over all statistics not artistic direction)
+Single Player Campaign
+Better graphics
+MUCH superior net code
+New innovative weapons such as the buckler.
I mean seriously... Pro's vs Con's.... I'm pretty sure the Pro's out weigh the con's for EVERYONE who enjoyed playing "Duel" mode in the previous tribes games.
//fails to see how it was this mega turd of a game.... what I DO see is a failed publisher running out of funds and a bad decision by new publisher to cut cost instead of advertising.... which resulted in no further support.
Had dev gone smoothly... we would have probably seen many patches to come and maybe even an expansion pack and a Tribes 4. It's Vivendi's fault and no one else's.
Tribes player for life..... since day 18. (That day I was wondering in babbage's back in 98' was 18 days after release.)
Oh and by the way... T:V was received better by critics than ANY of the previous tribes/starseige/earthseige games, pulling in the best reviews of the series.
Ex:
Gamespot 8.5 Tribes 2
8.8 Tribes: Vengaence
